Penile clamps can be a great temporary option to help reduce urinary leakage and work towards continence (not having leakage). You should be doing kegels as directed by your pelvic health provider during this time. Penile clamps are intended only as a temporary aid in restoring continence. Building up control of your pelvic floor muscles during this time is critical for long term success. Before you start using your clamp, make sure you are tested for a urinary tract infection and do not use the clamp if you have an active infection.
- Talk with your provider and use information provided by the manufacturer to find a penile clamp that is the correct fit for your penis.
- Do not set it so tightly that you lose feeling in your penis.
- Every 2-3 hours, move the clamp up or down your shaft. Make sure to not keep the clamp in the same position on your penis for more than 2-3 hours at a time. Try to go to the bathroom to urinate when you take the clamp off.
- Wear the clamp throughout the day about 6 days per week. It can be helpful to take a day off from using the clamp to see how your progress is going. Keeping a chart or diary of your urinary symptoms and pad usage during this off day can be incredibly helpful for tracking progress.
- Take the clamp off before bed each night.
Most clamps can be used for about 3 months before the foam will start to wear down. Keep an eye out for any signs of the product deteriorating and replace it when needed. Reach out to your provider right away if you have any difficulty removing the clamp.
